Hockley, Texas – For over 40 years, Boys and Girls Country has changed the lives of children from families in crisis by loving and nurturing them in a Christian home environment, raising them to become self-sustaining and contributing adults.

Located in Hockley, Texas, northwest of Houston, Boys and Girls Country was founded in 1971 with the donation of a small plot of land and a $25 check as a charitable home for at-risk boys. A few years later, a campus for girls was established a few miles away. In 1997, a College and Career program was put in motion to insure that the kids don’t ‘age-out’ of the program and might have a chance at college and career in order to become successful, productive adults. Soon after in 1998, the two campuses merged on to the current 210-acre location with a capacity to serve 88 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 18.

Boys and Girls Country is an amazing organization with which The Edaren Foundation is very pleased to be partnering. Their model is to place up to 8 children in one of the 11 cottages on their campus with a married “Teaching Parent” couple and their children, and two single Teaching Parents who raise these children as their own. They attend school locally and their BGC family supports them, provides emotional and educational support, and holds them accountable to their peers and their greater community.

Education is a major priority and focus for the BGC kids and staff. They supplement in the summer with arts programs, and have added environmental education with a gift of solar panels that helps offset the campus’ energy usage and carbon footprint.

Edaren’s grant is directed specifically towards this part of their mission, and the Board is proud to help these young men and women achieve their goals.
